My Spiritual Journey

By D. Brian Blackwell

I wasn't always aware of God or Jesus Christ. As a child, I wasn't aware of Jesus in anyway, nor God. The only experience I had with churches were the big, majestic buildings with strange statues, two family funerals, and two weddings — a very limited resource on which to build an idea of Christianity. Throughout my teen years, whenever I saw Christians, I would think, "I want to get to know them."  My parents never attended church, and were agnostic, at best. When I went away at 17 for army training, I attended church service for the first time. It was a whole new and unusual experience for me. So much so that I knew I had to learn more about God and the Bible.

Over the course of my adult life, I explored many faiths, read several books on different religions, and attended different church services. In 2021, I became a member of the Presbyterian Church, and serve as an Elder and Liturgist. I felt that the Presbyterian faith represented me the most. Presbyterian theology emphasizes the sovereignty of God, the authority of the scriptures, and the necessity of grace through faith in Christ Jesus.

In all that has happened since, in all situations, I have trusted in the Holy Spirit for His protection, for His provision, for His guidance. God has never failed me. My life has been turned around for good in so many ways. Jehovah God has given me purpose and value. He has given me a new perspective, a healing beyond anything imaginable. He has given me faith, and love. Life has been so much better and easier knowing the truth. The Holy Spirit and Christ Jesus have given me a new life!
